What is resocialization? The psychologist explains...

There are people in our society who have experienced difficulties and were temporarily excluded from it. However, there is hope and the possibility of a new beginning through the process of resocialization. This process helps Volnyja to reintegrate into society, regaining skills, confidence and self-esteem.

During resocialization, a person:

✅ Restores lost social status

✅ Changes his behavior

✅ Forms new social connections

✅ Learns norms, cultural and social values of society.

🗣 The expert and psychologist of the Volnyja initiative explained what resocialization is and why it is needed.

Resocialization is the process of returning to life in a new or different society.

Resocialization helps a person to regain their skills, confidence and self-esteem in order to successfully return to daily life and adapt socially.

Who goes through resocialization?

  • Former prisoners
  • People suffering from addictions
  • Refugees and forced migrants
  • Children and adolescents who have been separated from their families
  • People who unexpectedly changed their life or social circle (due to illness, maternity leave, new social status)

Why do the Liberals need resocialization?

1. Support in solving problems

After leaving, the Volnyja face a number of challenges, from forgotten experiences using technology to the ability to make choices. This is because in the conditions of imprisonment, a person has a small number of things that a person can influence, and the choice is most often made for him/her.

Best to have a reliable shoulder nearby.

2. Help in experiencing difficult feelings

Euphoria from release and meeting loved ones, disappointment from the fact that some expectations may not be fulfilled, anxiety related to adaptation to a new life and uncertainty with work, education, relationships and housing, and perhaps also anxiety due to the need to interact with the authorities and fear of possible re-arrest.

3. Overcoming prejudice

Some Volnyja can feel guilty and stigmatized as a criminal. Being innocently convicted, people lose trust in others.

Resocialization allows people to regain their honor and dignity, as well as receive support from society.

4. Work on yourself

Many may experience depression and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) while incarcerated or even some time after release.

Systematic work on oneself, with one's quality of life, gives Volnyja a chance to recover and prevent serious consequences.

Why does society need resocialization?

Resocialization contributes to the strengthening of society, as successfully adapted people become its active and useful members. The Belarusian community needs it all the more now to be consolidated and show solidarity.
